Position Summary

Primary position responsible for oversight and the enforcement of underwriting practices and policies. Evaluation of risk for both prospective and renewal rate proposals consistent with corporate revenue goals and standards. Responsible for conducting research, using risk assessments, and financial modeling to make high level decisions which support the strategic and marketing goals and objectives of the health plan.

Accountabilities

  1. Evaluate risk and rate calculations of large prospective and renewal rate proposals and make strategic recommendations to leadership. Assist, support, and guide other team members on UW techniques, market trends, and appropriate rating methodology.

  2. Enforce and ensure all compliance and quality control standards are being met by underwriting team.

  3. Organize and lead rating and reporting discussions with brokers, consultants, and clients, as needed.

  4. Provide analytical support to Actuarial team in evaluation of rating factors, rate filings, benefit design, and product development.

  5. Assist Finance Department in the development of the commercial product line revenue budget.

  6. Create, modify, test, and maintain rating spreadsheets/software. Interpret updated rate filings and ensure that they are incorporated into production.

  7. Discuss strategies for new sales growth and retention of current business with Sr. Leadership as well as bring forth suggestions on benefit and policy changes to increase member satisfaction and improve profitability.

  8. Prepare executive level dashboards that demonstrate progress towards department metrics and develop ad hoc reporting to address specific concerns as needed.

  9. Plan, organize, staff, direct and oversee the day-to-day operations of the team; develop and implement policies and programs as necessary.

  10. Perform management responsibilities to include, but are not limited to: involved in hiring and termination decisions, coaching and development, rewards and recognition, performance management and staff productivity.

  11. Recommend and implement changes to current processes, tools, and software to improve internal and external customer service as well as profitability.

  12. Perform other duties as directed.

Job Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in business or healthcare administration, math, actuarial science or insurance required.
  • Management experience required.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills required.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel, Word, Access, and Power Point required.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and organize multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Must be adaptable to change, display qualities of initiative and be able to work independently.
  • Proven strong leadership, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Must have ability to generate quality work product under tight deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrate creativity and be able to develop innovative solutions to business challenges.
  • Leads by example to cultivate a climate of motivation, positive energy and meaning in work.
  • Years of Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in finance related to health care.
