Why Complete a Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency? The UTMC PGY-2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency provides our residents with a comprehensive pharmacy administration background, as well as general health system leadership. The PGY-2 HSPAL Residency at UTMC is an ASHP (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists) pre-candidate for accreditation. The residency is a 12-month structured training program designed to allow the resident to build upon experience from their PGY-1 year as well as gain new experience in a variety of areas within health-system pharmacy administration. Experiences and areas of focus include:

        • Staffing in Central and Decentralized Pharmacy Service Areas

          • Fiscal Management
            • Human Resources Management- Interviewing, Recruitment, Retention, and Performance

                • Regulatory Requirements

                  • Informatics and Electronic Medical Record Planning
                    • Precepting PGY-1 Residents and Students

                      • Drug Use Policy and Pharmacoeconomics
                        • Special Projects

                            • Purchasing: Distribution, Contracting, and Supply Chain Management

                                • Committee Involvement Program Structure PGY-2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY-1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY-2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who complete an accredited PGY-2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available. This goal of this HSPAL PGY-2 residency is to develop the pharmacy leaders of tomorrow. Our resident will receive extensive training in all key pharmacy department administrative areas to allow him/her to be qualified for a variety of management/leadership positions upon completion of the residency. The structure of the residency program at UTMC is based around multiple 2-6 week learning experiences (rotations), adjusted in length based on resident experience and current learning opportunities. Each rotation will have a longitudinal component involving projects and committee involvement. Staffing will be scheduled in the evening and on weekends. The typical resident schedule is every third weekend. Quality Improvement Project Completion of a quality improvement project is a required component of the residency program. The purpose of this requirement is to introduce the resident to the principles of the scientific method including the design, preparation, performance, and interpretation of a quality improvement project. The resident will learn and apply knowledge concerning institutional review boards, data collection, and analysis. The resident will also gain experience in the preparation of a manuscript for publication as well as the opportunity to improve his/her public speaking skills through formal presentations. Teaching Certificate Program Though not a program requirement, residents have the opportunity to participate in the Teaching and Learning Certificate Program (TLCP) affiliated with The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Residents participate in didactic lectures on precepting philosophy and technique, teaching experiences at the college of pharmacy, and the development of a teaching portfolio program. This program will allow the resident to gain a broad understanding of issues in pharmacy education and opportunities to practice their teaching skills.
